What is the Emergency Carers Service? 


The aim of this service is to provide emergency breaks and rapid response support to carers at short notice, to deal with emergency situations or to prevent a crisis from occurring. The service also provides support for one off appointments and events to offer the carer more support and flexibility to deal with life’s unexpected events.

Emergency situation:

  • The carer is unwell
  • The carer needs to support another family member
  • The carer needs to attend training or work event outside of normal working hours

Crisis Prevention:

  • The person with care needs is unwell and is unable to be left alone for the usual period of time

One off appointments:

  •  The carer needs to attend a hospital appointment
  • The carer wants to attend a family celebration, such as a wedding
  • The carer needs to attend a meeting or training event

How do I access this service?


The service began in July 2010 and is available to carers looking after someone over the age of 18 years, living across Northamptonshire. There is an open referral process, which means that carers can refer themselves to the service as well as health and social care professionals on behalf of the carers, permission must be obtained from the carer being referred.

  • The service is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Every carer looking after someone over 18 years old is eligible for a maximum of 3 breaks per year
  • Each emergency break is provided for up to 72 hours in the Carer’s home
  • The service is funded by Northamptonshire County Council. There is no cost to the carer.
