‘There are estimated over 500,000 GEM carers and research shows they provide more care than average’ -  Carers UK 2022

As a Carer from this community group you may experience various difficulties such as greater risk of ill health, unemployment, language barriers and social exclusion.

Specific Challenges:

  • You may be unaware of the support services available to you as a Carer
  • You may have difficulty accessing culturally appropriate resources and support that meet gender, religion & dietary needs
  • You may find understanding and finding out about resources and support difficult due to a language barrier
  • You may not be sure who to trust that your needs are being met and respected

Carer Challenges:

  • You may not self-identify as a Carer as it may not be not recognised or is viewed as part of your role within your culture
  • You may feel that the support service staff may lack awareness in providing quality support from a culturally appropriate perspective
  • You may feel pressured to keep your caring role within the family and not look or ask for support outside of the family unit
  • You may feel worried asking for help or feeling unsure of what might happen if you do

 Who can help you:

  • Speak to others in your community about your caring role. It helps to talk about how it is affecting your wellbeing
  • Ask for help as the sooner you can get support the easier it will be for you
  • Contact your doctor to let them know you are a carer and they can help put in contact with other support services such as Northamptonshire Carers or other community organisations. (see Further information and support)
