What is the Carers Sitting Service?

The Carers Sitting Service has been running since 2012. It is free to access and provides a short-break to those with a caring responsibility for a husband, wife, partner, parent, relative or friend.

Support is delivered by volunteers and are therefore unable to provide personal or any hands on care but they do offer a befriending role. This gives the person being cared for some different company and enables the carer to take some time away from their caring role. A sitting session can last from between 2 and 3 hours and is often on a weekly basis.

Who The Service Is For

  • People who live in Northamptonshire.
  • All carers and young carers however the looked after-person using the service must be an adult who is 18 plus.
  • People with a range of needs, which may include physical health issues or someone living with dementia.

When is the service available?

The service is currently available between the hours of 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

What Kind Of Support Can The Sitting Service Offer Me?

  • Low-level support provided by volunteers e.g. befriending; where appropriate accompanying to external activities, to residents of Northamptonshire.

  • Time away from the caring role for the carer.

  • The service is initially available between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday.

  • Support offered by the sitting service can be up to 3 hours in duration per session. Providing volunteers are available this can be a regular or semi-regular arrangement.

How do I access the carers sitting service?

You may be referred to the service by a Carer Support Worker or by our Carer Support Line. Or you can contact the service on 01933 677907 and ask to speak to Emma Begley, Kaysha Marlow or Adam Wilson. Alternatively you can email us at [email protected]

What happens next?

Once you have been referred one of our volunteer coordinators will call you to arrange a visit to get to know a bit more about you and to check the sitting service is appropriate for your needs. We will then match you with a local volunteer and arrange an introductory visit for you to meet the volunteer. If you and the volunteer are happy with the visit than we will arrange a time for their first visit.

Please contact us to discuss this service further or to make a referral. This is an extremely popular service and we are always looking out for new volunteers.
